Lagos State Governor, Mr.  Babatunde Fashola
Lagos State Governor, Mr.  Babatunde Fashola, has said the state energy reform initiatives are yielding positive result with the state close to being self-sufficient in its power needs.
To this end, he said some public institutions were being moved out of the national grid and connected to the power being generated from the power plants built by the state government.
Fashola, according to a report yesterday by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), spoke during his engagement with a spectrum of residents and the Diaspora community on the social media platform, Google Plus Hangout.
The session was part of the build-up activities to mark October as the Energy Conservation Month, declared by the state government to sensitise residents on the importance of energy conservation and efficient use of available power.
The governor who answered questions from participants, said the objective of de-connecting some public institutions from the national grid and connecting them to the state power infrastructure was to ensure 24-hour uninterrupted power supply so that they could be more efficient in the delivery of services.
He said: “Working within what the Power Sector Reform Act permits, we are gradually entering self generation in Lagos State through our independent power plants. As you may be aware, we have an IPP at Akute and the Island Power Plant. In a few days, we shall be commissioning the Alausa Power Plant. Once this is done, government offices will be taken off the supply from the national grid and the power which we no longer need will be made available to Lagosians.”
The Google Plus Hangout was hosted by popular music rapper and Lagos State Energy Ambassador, Mr. Jude Abaga (M.I).
He was joined by five ‘Power Kids’ from Iju Senior Secondary School led by Master Gideon Osadare and Dimeji Lawal-Are, a 500-level Computer Science student, University of Lagos, leading four others from some tertiary institutions in the state.

ASUU in soup as FG invoke the no work no pay labour rule

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 02 Oktober 2013 0 komentar

The Federal Government has invoked the ‘no work, no pay’ labour rule against striking university lecturers as their industrial action enters the 93rd day with no end in sight.
Some of the federal university vice chancellors have not paid the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) members their August and September salaries in compliance with the government’s directive.
Some branch chairmen of ASUU see the government and vice chancellor’s move as an attempt to break the rank of their members, insisting that their members are resolute on the ongoing strike.

Some ASUU branch chairmen told Daily Sun that text messages were sent to vice chancellors to apply the ‘no work, no pay’ labour rules to academic staff on strike and that the decision had affected the payment of salary of non-academic staff in the university system.
According to one of the branch chairmen, he and his exco confronted their university management over the salary delay and the he showed them the text message asking them not to pay salary to ASUU members.
He stressed that the ‘no work, no pay’ labour rule had never worked, pointing out that ASUU has a counter-measure, which was ‘no pay, no work,’ and that the union was not on strike because of salary increment.

Nigeria Sixth Worst Country To Grow Old, Says UN Report

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

On the day that Nigeria celebrated its 53rd anniversary as an independent nation, a new study released today by the UN backed Help Age International advocacy group ranked Nigeria among the worst countries in the world that least care about their old population.

The Global AgeWatch Index ranked 91 countries, with Nigeria ranked 85th, the sixth worst, with a poor record of catering for the well-being of the elderly, people older than 60.

Though Nigeria has the highest GDP among the African Index countries, it ranks third lowest for income security, the report said.

“This reflects its limited pension coverage, at 5 per cent. It ranks 84th in the health domain and, with Rwanda, has the lowest life expectancy at age 60 – 16 years.

“For employment and education, Nigeria ranks 70 with the fourth highest proportion of older people, 17.4%, with secondary or higher education among its African Index counterparts.

“Nigeria ranks second lowest regionally, at 76, in the enabling environment domain, with only 53% of older Nigerians enjoying civic freedom.

The report indicated that older Nigerians are taking part in the Age Demands Action campaign for the first time this year.

In contrast, Sweden offers the best environment to grow old. Expectedly, Afghanistan is the worst – but general affluence does not necessarily mean better conditions for the over-60s, reports the London Guardian.

While Sweden’s top ranking – followed by Norway, Germany, the Netherlands and Canada – may be predictable, the Global AgeWatch index throws up some surprising results.

The US, the world’s richest country, languishes in eighth place, while the UK fails to make the top 10, residing instead at No 13. Sri Lanka ranks 36, well above Pakistan at 89, despite similar levels of gross domestic product (GDP). Bolivia and Mauritius score higher than the size of their economies may suggest, while the emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China are a mixed bag. Brazil and China rank relatively high on the index; India and Russia sit much lower.

The ageing index is calculated using 13 indicators under four headings: income security, healthcare, employment and education, and an enabling environment. All indicators have equal weight, except for pension income coverage, life expectancy at 60, healthy life expectancy at 60, and psychological wellbeing. These categories were given increased weighting because of better data quality, and countries were included only if there was sufficient data.
