5 best free alternatives of Google Reader for Android devices

Hear that? That's the sound of millions of news junkies on the Web scrambling to find an alternative to Google Reader.

As you may have heard, Google Reader will soon be no more. The search giant has announced that it will shutter its much-maligned -- though still widely used -- RSS reader, which will, no doubt, leave many users in a tizzy, searching for other ways to subscribe to their favorite RSS feeds. Sure, Google Reader may not have been the most beautifully designed product to come out of Mountain View, Calif., but it sure was convenient. And now that it's going away, it's evident just how valuable it has been.

With that in mind, we've put together a list of what we think are the best replacements for the soon-to-be-late Google Reader. Plugged-in types won't want to miss a beat once Google Reader sees its sunset, so getting familiar with these alternatives now could be key.

Ideally, an RSS reader should be available on both mobile devices and desktop computers, so we tried our best to focus on this type of service.

That said, we also thought it important to mention a couple of services (at the bottom) that are only available on Android and iOS, simply because we know that they're viable alternatives, and more people than ever are reading on mobile devices these days anyway.

Feedly for Android (free)

One of Feedly's most popular features is that it can sync with Google Reader. But since that feature will soon be useless, we need to focus on the rest of what the app brings to the table. Fortunately, Feedly brings a lot.

When you first launch Feedly, it offers up a menu of featured sites from all around the Web. These sites cover categories from Design to Android to Apple to Business. You can go through and subscribe to any of these featured sites individually, or you can even subscribe to entire categories of sites with a single click. And of course, you can always search for specific URLs, site names, or topics from within Feedly and subscribe that way, just as you would with Google Reader.

More than just an RSS reader, though, Feedly comes with a built-in "Save for Later" feature and a History function, so you can go back and see what you recently read. It even lets you share items via Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.

Overall, Feedly is one of the best RSS readers out there. It performs well and looks slick on both iOS and Android. And for desktops, it is available via Firefox or Chrome browser plug-ins.

Taptu for Android (free)

Taptu gives you a visual interface for browsing news feeds, a lot like Pulse (see below), and also lets you add your personal Twitter and Facebook feeds for easy access. But the DJ aspect of the app is that you can customize your feeds exactly the way you want them.

The app comes with several premade Taptu-curated news categories, but it's just as easy to strike out on your own with the feeds you already love. Build a stream from scratch using the Add Streams button, where you'll find tons of feeds from popular publications. You also can search by category, or simply perform a search to gather all the feeds that relate to a specific keyword.

In our experience, Taptu was a little laggy when scrolling through stories from within the app, but you have the option to switch to a Web version of a story that is much smoother. At any rate, Taptu is great for finding and tuning your feeds and makes for a great way to tailor your news to your specs.

Pulse for Android (free)

Pulse News gives you all the news from your favorite feeds with an intuitive interface for touch screens. News sites are laid out vertically so you can swipe up and down to the latest news from all sites quickly, or you can swipe horizontally to read more stories from the same site. If you want to switch categories, you can touch the menu button and choose from a list or you can use a search field to find sites by keyword. The app comes preloaded with several popular Web sites you can add to your Pulse home screen.

The layout of this app is especially intuitive, making it easy for people unfamiliar with newsreaders to get started quickly. Your Pulse home screen is completely customizable, so you can reorder your feed list to show your most-read sites first. You can also add Facebook to your feed if you want to see the latest stories from your friends.

If you want a slick and elegant way to quickly read news stories from all your favorite Web sites, Pulse takes only a little bit of setup to have the latest headlines laid out for you when you launch.

Flipboard for Android(free)

Flipboard is already an immensely popular newsreader and social-network hub, but it has no desktop or browser-based component. Still, if you have an iOS or Android device, Flipboard is an excellent option because you can organize the info you want to look at and then flip through it like a magazine. All you need to do is create an account with Flipboard, then sign in to your Facebook, Google+, and Twitter accounts to be fully socially connected.

Once you're all signed in, Flipboard presents you with an intuitive layout of your social networks and some default news categories to browse. Touching a panel lets you browse through any of the default categories; touching and holding a panel lets you delete it and replace it with whatever RSS feed you might want. You can customize your Flipboard by browsing through several categories like News, Technology, Business, and Entertainment, then adding popular sites to your Flipboard like BBC News, the Guardian, The Economist, and Salon.

Flipboard's strength is in its magazine-like layout, but there's an enormous amount of content to choose from, making it possible to customize it with exactly the types of stories you want.

Google Currents for Android (free)

Never heard of this one? Don't worry, you're not alone. Google Currents was officially unveiled in December 2011 on both Android and iOS, and was framed as a sort of hybrid magazine viewer and RSS reader in one. Relatively few people jumped on its bandwagon then, and still today it has yet to gain widespread traction on either mobile platform. Regardless of its usage statistics, though, Google Currents is still useful, especially now that Google Reader will be going away.

Similar to Flipboard, Google Currents employs a magazine-style interface with large images and paginated posts. It may not be most intuitive app in the world, but it looks sleek and works well. It lets you subscribe to and download app-optimized editions of publications like Forbes and CNET, and you can subscribe to any RSS-enabled sites you like, just like with Google Reader. There's even a Breaking News feature that instantly pulls up the latest news stories within a given category.

While Google Currents may not be the biggest name on our list (even though it is, in fact, made by Google), there's no doubt that this app has potential. And with its sibling Google Reader soon biting the dust, it may even be poised for a huge upswing in popularity.

5 Most Popular Downloaded Android Apps for Mobile Devices

Surfing the internet via smartphones has been a hot habit among the world. People are all used to read pages online with smartphones in hand while they are waiting for the bus, walking home, on train, or even resting on sofa. However, most people have no idea on how to make online surfing safer and more convenient. That’s what I’m talking about today in the post. I would like to share some most popular and downloaded Android apps, which either helps make it safer and more convenient to surf the internet or delivers more fun for Android users.

1. Hotspot Shield VPN

If you're willing to put up with some ads, Hotspot Shield VPN is a free app that aims to make your Wi-Fi connections secure and protect your privacy while online.

The interface is clean and simple. Hotspot Shield VPN is basically ready to go as soon as you open it. It's capable of optimizing data flow, providing you with a little more mileage when using 3G or 4G networks (depending on your unit), and further encrypting your sent data so that info and messages will not be intercepted by a third party. It also shields your IP address, so you can surf anonymously. One downside to this simplicity is that you don't have direct control of the app. Instead, Hotspot Shield VPN adjusts settings and connects to networks on its own. The other is that the free version is supported by ads and doesn't give you access to customer service 24 hours a day.

2. 1Mobile Market

The 1Mobile Market for Android offers a curated selection of fun, useful, and otherwise interesting apps, all of which are free. It's unique because it's managed by a team of actual editors, rather than a set of algorithms that try to home in on what you're looking for.

First thing you'll notice is that 1Mobile's main panel looks a bit like a cheap knock-off of Google Play, with its large tiles and similar color scheme.

While looks may not be 1Mobile's strong suit, the app does offer tons of value in other ways. It's a lot more manageable (size-wise) than Google Play, and it offers a number of useful tools to find the apps you're looking for.

Swipe left from the main panel, and you'll see a list of categories for a typical browsing experience. Swipe right to see Top apps, AppLists, and Editor's Picks. AppLists are uniquely helpful, in that they group apps based on specific interests. For instance, there are lists for Fitness fiends, vegetarians, movie lovers, bookworms, and so on. These groupings are one good reason to check 1Mobile before going straight to Google Play.

Another way to find apps on 1Mobile Market is through Search. If you do a typical keyword search, 1Mobile will attempt to autocomplete your terms, which can be very helpful. Also, there's a unique (thought not necessarily useful) keyword cloud that offers handfuls of typical search terms for you to try.

It's important to note that you don't actually download any apps directly from 1Mobile. Rather, each product page just features a link, which leads directly to the download page on Google Play. Also, on the product page you can Like or Dislike an app, see all its vitals, and view screenshots.

One thing to watch out for with 1Mobile is invalid links. Since the whole market is curated by editors, sometimes a recommendation can lead to a page that no longer exists on Google Play.

3. Talking Tom Cat 2 Free

With a few changes and some additional functions, Talking Tom Cat 2, an interactive voice-recognition app, brings more cuteness to your Android device.

The opening screen of Talking Tom Cat 2 has many of the same elements as the original, but now Tom is set up in his own apartment with a new nemesis, Ben. The graphics are just as good in the second version and the onscreen movements are very fluid. The talk function is there again and Tom can repeat anything you say in his distinctive voice. He'll also reflexively react when you poke or swipe certain parts of his body. If you try pulling his tail for example, he'll react defensively. For even more fun, you can dress up Tom in clothes, costumes, and accessories. At times, the humor is a bit juvenile, but there's nothing really offensive here and Talking Tom 2's only goal seems to make his owner laugh. The app can be installed on lower-tier smartphones that have limited graphics, although a few hiccups might occur, but it works best on devices with full graphics capabilities.

There's more to do here than in the first Talking Tom Cat and, although it might not have seemed possible, they've upped the cute factor even more. We highly recommend this app to anyone who needs a quick laugh or fun diversion during down time.

4. Wifi Hack

Simulating access to any type of Wi-Fi network, Wifi Hack can bring you a couple of minutes of fame as a hacker. However, even though it's fun to see your phone pierce its way through a Wi-Fi network in a fake manner, the entertainment with the Wifi Hack app only lasts once for every set of audience that you show your trick to.

Upon accessing the app, you are simply given a list of available Wi-Fi networks in the area. The list is of course based on the actual available networks that your unit can detect. Choose one of these, and the app will start babbling out some technical computer status update lines. It will try to look like it is technically doing something, but in reality those are just words written on the screen. After successfully hacking into the selected network, the Wi-Fi indicator will show up, falsely telling that it is already connected to the desired network.

It's quite fun to use actually, especially if you show it off to your friends who haven't heard about this app. The trick can even be more convincing if you have 3G or 4G connection at the moment, since you can show to them that you are really connected to the Internet. Functionally, though, the Wifi Hack app does not have anything to offer, and the trick would get old pretty easily after each of your friends sees it once.

5. Wifi Hacker 2013

Did you forget your wireless password again? At a friend’s house and they have no idea what their login information is? Wish you didn't have to sit at the library waiting for a wifi key? Draw Something arrives in the Amazon App Store for the Kindle Fire

Draw Something has amassed many users in its time on Android and it has now made the leap onto a device that is suggested to of have captured half of the US Android market share. Yes, Draw Something is now available in the Amazon App Store for the Kindle Fire. You get two options to choose from, the free ad-supported version or you can pony up the $1.99 and go ad free. Hit the source link for the downloads or just go ahead and load up your Amazon Kindle Fire and get to drawing something fun.

Drawing is a really funny thing. Most people fall into one of two categories: excellent or incredibly terrible. What better way to expose people and complicate the matters further than by forcing you to use your chubby fingers to draw crude, cave painting-like images with a friend, and then try to guess what the other person drew? Well, that seems to be the thinking at OMGPOP, because they made a little game called Draw Something that does just that, and it's all the rage these days.

The premise is ridiculously simple: pick a word from a list of three, try and draw it using different colors and brushes, then send it along to your friend and see if they can guess the correct word. Guessing is aided by the fact that your letter selection isn't infinite; on the contrary, you're only given a small handful of letters that aren't in your word, so as long as you can discern what you need, you'll be fine.

The three words you're given to choose from get increasingly more difficult, but the reward is also increased if your partner correctly guesses the word, too. There's a built-in incentive for trying to accumulate coins as fast as you can; coins can buy you precious bombs that eliminate letters not used in your word, or can buy you new colors to add to your palette.

You've got two options to create an account: login with your Facebook account or create a username. If you opt for the former, you can invite any of your friends from your friends list that is playing and start up a game. If you opt for the latter, you've got to add people by their username. In the sad event you don't have any friends to play with, you can also be matched with a random opponent, too, so you can still get your draw on. Either way, you can play against your friends on Android, or on iOS. Nice.

For a game with so simple a concept, Draw Something really strikes a chord with me (and everyone else, apparently). It's probably the social aspect, but there's something oddly rewarding about guessing correctly even though the drawing looked like something a pre-schooler would do. At any rate, it's fun as can be, so you might as well give it a shot. Missing, however, are notifications for when it's your turn. Booo.

Finally, Instagram Android Version is Available in Google Play

Sorry for my always bad memory but I still remember that I have been told everybody that Instagram for Android is coming several days before (Here: Instagram For Android Runs Better Than iOS ). And now, it is available in Google Play. What's more, only 2 days past, this app had reached over millions of downloads.

Launched in 2010, Instagram has been exclusive to the iPhone (and camera-enabled iPads) because Instagram's CEO Kevin Systrom wanted it to be perfect. Systrom was quoted as saying Instagram for Android is "one of the most amazing Android apps you'll ever see."

The Android version should be virtually identical to the iPhone experience with the exception that Tilt Shift/Blur, Share from Feed, Live Preview and Share to Flickr are absent till now.

In terms of functionality, the Android application itself is identical to its Apple iOS cousin, featuring simple flash controls and a camera-switch button to alternate between front-facing and rear-facing cameras with a single tap. Unfortunately, the application still lacks spot-focusing, cropping and zooming after a picture has already been taken.

As a newer in Android, Instagram still have some bugs need to be fixed. With so many Android phones available with all ranges of cameras surely this was a task that will probably take another update or two.
